“Spread out!” Sheffner called, “Find prints, anything!” It was deathly quiet in the room. Abruptly, a scream chilled their hearts.
“Some sort of trapdoor, sir,” an officer explained painfully, “I think I sprained my ankle.”
The others looked below and saw spikes protruding at the bottom of the trapdoor.
“Well, it was clear that Hendricks’ ancestors were just as insane as him,” Sheffner addressed his group, “Let’s get out of this room.” He then beckoned to the wounded officer and another.
“Go back to Donahue and Parker;” Sheffner told them, “Chasing a murderer is too hard on a bad leg.”
The two left and the others continued down the nightmarish hall. As they almost lost hope, they all felt a cold chill. "The wind!" an officer exclaimed. Carefully, they followed the icy breeze and found the way. Just as they were about to break down the door, a woman blocked their path. The only strange thing was the woman was transparent.
"How dare you come on my husband's land!" she screamed at the frightened policemen. "First, you killed his brother, now you have come for him!"
She continued her strange tirade, “The law? You cause more disorder than order. Anarchy is the only way the world can save itself…” Just then, a part of the ground fell from under a lieutenant, who stood next to Sheffner. "Look out, man!" Sheffner shouted as he leaped away. It was too late. The lieutenant plunged, screaming into an underground aqueduct. He fought to the top, but the panel had resealed itself. Slowly, he fell, unmoving to the bottom. Sheffner lunged at the feminine specter, but she had disappeared. The remaining man opened the door and found a thin corridor leading up to the second floor. It twisted and turned and was so thin, they could only walk one by one. Near the top, there were two doors, one was locked tight and the color was faded on it. The other opened easily, and led the policemen to their comrades.
Harper approached Sheffner, "Hendricks has probably left the house by now,"
"Sir," Sheffner added,” One of my men twisted his ankle on a trapdoor. Another man was drowned by a crazed ghost. She said we killed her husband's brother."
Harper looked at his colleague with surprise," Who is her husband?" he asked.
"I don’t know," Sheffner answered, “She was yelling at us too loudly. I thought she was a banshee at first.”
"This is most troubling indeed. Ghosts and gruesome murders. Let’s radio the others that we will be coming back to them."
Minutes before, Parker stood by the door, waiting and alert at every sound. Donahue, a medical student, was helping to make a splint for the wounded officer, Van Andel. As Parker looked at the snowstorm, a dark figure with a crossbow shot an arrow at him. "Look out!" Donahue called, and lunging, tackled Parker away from the arrow's tip. They crashed to the ground as the arrow narrowly missed. While they struggled to stand, the front door of the mansion opened and closed swiftly. Donahue peered through the glass to see Hendricks’ fleeting figure running through a frosty graveyard. Parker patted Donahue on the back as he saw poison slinking from the arrowhead. Just then, a beep came from Donahue's radio.
"Yes, chief," Donahue replied, "The killer has fled the building."
“We’re on our way and a little shorthanded. Tell Parker to drive Van Andel home and return as soon as possible.”
“We just have to keep hope, sir,” Donahue said confidently, “After all; we’re no longer in Hendricks’ weapon of choice.”
“I hope so.”

"What's that?" Colburn asked, befuddled," sounds like… a trumpet."
A horn flew into view blasting a fanfare of sorts. The tone was bright and clear, almost like a rally charge of an army detachment. After its phrase was finished, it clattered to the ground. The police, pale with fear saw greenish vapor spraying from the table.
"Gas!" Colburn choked, "Come on!" As they ran, the knights clambered to life among the walls and marched towards the fleeing officers. The screams of the officers were soon drowned out by the harmonious playing of a Strauss waltz, FeuerFest, by a ghostly orchestra. The pipe organ boomed the mellow phrases as men fell choking to the ground and bloodied from the ghastly slashes of the ethereal knights. Colburn and another officer ran to the door in vain as the chandelier laced with knives fell, crashing to the ground. They both were killed by the sharp blades as they fell to the ground.
From the safe balcony, Hendricks clapped as the orchestra finished their waltz of death and despair. “A remarkable performance,” he thought, “but only the grand overture in my great play.” Suddenly, he heard the clambering of men down the hallway and once again was the prey.
Hot on Hendricks' tail were Harper's crew, they ascended up a small staircase and opened a door. From his position on the balcony, Harper saw the corpses of his colleagues lying on the floor below them, and a bitter chill was in the air. The explanation for the bitter freeze was the huge window swung open. By now, the toxic fumes had dissipated and escaped, but the sight of the bodies was too much for some of the men. One next to Harper broke down after seeing his father’s lifeless body below them. Harper did his best to console the men and after wiping away tears, reached the basement team on his radio.
"It appears that Hendricks has fled our sector," Harper said to the other team leader.
"Have you warned the other team?" the other asked.
"They have all been… slaughtered by the killer," Harper replied quietly.
There was a pause. "I'm sorry, chief but it appears that we have our own problems right now. Sheffner out."

When reinforcements arrived, the snow had already accumulated to a centimeter. The County Sheriff Harper was in charge of a crew of city officers and state officers.
"The man we seek is very dangerous," Harper was saying," He is not sane. Always be on the lookout for him and have your guns loaded at all time. We have no blue prints of the house; it has been locked for eighty years."
While Harper was speaking, Hendricks looked out an alcove window at the police force. If they were foolish to step inside his ancestral home, they would all die, slowly and painfully.
"Come on men!" Harper called as a special force worked on getting the door opened. Soon, it swung open, creaking slowly. Harper had organized his men into teams of five. One team would comb each floor in search of Hendricks and were ordered to bring alive if possible. After wishing the others luck, Harper went upstairs with his team.
"Creepy place, isn't it?" Donahue said to one of his compatriots, who was peering at a strange music box. When the officer opened it, an eerie waltz played softly.
After closing it, the officer talked to Donahue, "This house is old and has a tragic history. According to the books, Hendricks is not the first in his family to kill without known cause."
"His great grandfather was always willing to kill a man who stood in the way of the Hendricks wealth," the officer continued as thunder crashed outside.
An aristocratic gentleman approached the grungy man working at the oil rig. "Parker!" he grumbled.
Parker turned and, wiping his hands, replied," Yes, Mr. Hendricks?"
"Parker," Hendricks continued, "You are an honest man, are you not?"
"Aye, sir," Parker answered, "I believe that I am."
"Then, please explain why you let those deputies on our land!" Hendricks shouted, grabbing his employee by the shirt collar.
"But sir," Parker stammered, "I didn't think it was a problem, is it?"
Hendricks loosened his hold on Parker, "No. They just will slow our work down slightly, but, you'll pick up the slack won't you, Parker?"
"Yes, sir," Parker obliged, "I aim to."
"Good," Hendricks mumbled as he went on his way, leaving a befuddled Parker to his work.
Later, as the sun barely was above the horizon, Parker walked to his home. The lake was calm as he walked by and oddly; all other noise was very minimal, almost like the calm before an approaching storm. As Parker walked past a tall tree, a figure in red lunged at him. Parker screamed as a knife was plunged in his chest. He crumbled to the ground as the figure fled. Dozens of black birds squawked from their high abodes and flew off into the dying day.
In his lavish home, Hendricks was drinking wine when he saw the police vehicles arrive. They could not search corrupt business now with the murder to investigate. “Uncanny how life works sometimes”, Hendricks thought. He smiled and sipped into the red wine.
"My family was in shambles," Officer Parker said to Donahue, "Perhaps, now we will know the complete story of my grandfather's death."
"Donahue!" called Colburn, "You and Officer Parker should stay in the foyer, and we'll communicate via the radios."
“Okay, Chief. You can count on us.” Donahue saluted.
Both men halted and patrolled the foyer. After watching the others leave, Donahue noticed a spider hanging on a web. The spider maliciously had captured another insect and now devoured it. Disgusted, Donahue turned away and waited.
Colburn and his team had carefully surveyed the hallways, but could not find any evidence of the killer.
“The Masque of the Red Death,” read Colburn as he picked up a book. They also found The Raven, and Murders in the Rue Morgue.
“Hey, Colburn!” yelled another officer pointing to a suit of armor holding an axe and with its other hand, pointing to an ornate door. They walked towards it and it creaked open. The room they gazed at was unlike anything they had ever seen.

Chapter One- The Pursuit
<lj-cut text="yourtexthere">
Chad Hendricks ran quickly as the flashing sirens drew closer and closer. He darted through the woods, attempting to get the police off his trail. The forest was like him. They were both reckless and full of shadows and secrets. The police were waiting for him almost right after he killed the woman, a nurse at the local hospital. The other five times, they were far off and too late to catch his trickery. Finally, nearly out of breath, Hendricks heard the sirens die away. He sat down on a rock to catch his breath. It was a frosty November night and the full moon illuminated the forest with a spectral glow. He paused to wipe the dark red stains on his hands. Hendricks also cupped his hands to quench his thirst in a nearby stream. A chilling wind also brought the shrill of sirens back to the serene, dark woods. Hendricks began running again towards his shadowy goal.
"I don't know how the Chief wants us to find Hendricks in these blasted woods," a mustachioed officer said gruffly to his partner. His partner was Patrick Donahue, a new recruit, who, like the older officer, was assigned to his first murder investigation.
"I was reading the case files," Donahue replied to his partner, Colburn," Isn't there an old manor house in the middle of these woods? My father used to tell me ghost stories about it."
"Why yes!" Colburn exclaimed, "It was owned by one Victor Hendricks many years ago. No doubt, Hendricks might be heading there right now!" As the siren sounded, the bright red colors pierced through the trees.
Hendricks heard the siren sound again and estimated there was less than a half mile behind him. He brushed aside vines and sharp branches as he climbed up a hill. He stood on the tall clearing and faced a domineering mansion, gravely austere. Running up the path, he just reached the gate when a police car darted out of the forest.
"Halt!" a cry rose from the vehicle. But Hendricks was already at the steps. Just as Donahue and Colburn clambered out, Hendricks closed the door with a resounding slam.
Colburn slammed his fist on the car and cursed. As Donahue radioed for more assistance, Colburn saw the first snowflakes fall from the lofty skies.
